Casco Bay Estuary Partnership and the City of Portland are working with researchers to develop an ocean weather report to support decisions in the port of Portland, Maine. A new coastal ocean model will provide three-day forecasts of water movement in Portland Harbor and allow us to ask questions about the effect of storms or intense rainfall. We are working with local officials, waterfront businesses and community members to develop visualizations and other products to improve climate resilience and port operations and protect water quality.

We developed this web form to provide a quick way for anyone to provide their thoughts on how information from ocean models could be used to address local needs. You are welcome to answer as many of the following questions as you like. Your responses are anonymous.

Please describe your connection, if any, to Portland Harbor or the Port of Portland (e.g. resident, lobster harvester, waterfront business owner, employee, student, city official etc.)

The new Casco Bay model will provide a three-day forecast of ocean conditions in Casco Bay and Portland Harbor. The model can provide forecasts of water levels, storm surge, current velocities, and salinity around the Bay. What forecast information is most important to you? Why?

Ocean models can also be used to ask “what if” questions. We can, for example, examine flood risk under one foot or two feet of sea level rise, or study how a major storm would affect water movement in the harbor. Are there “what if” scenarios you think we should consider? Are there events like prolonged drought, or major storms where better understanding of ocean conditions might help you evaluate risks or prepare for the future?

We are looking for ideas about how to deliver model output and other ocean science data to the community. How would you prefer to access information on ocean conditions? Paper maps? Online resources? A phone app? We welcome creative ideas and suggestions.
